Inside the small historical centre of Matino, in the South of Salento, rises a small ortale (vegetable garden) built on the top of an ancient cistern, enclosed by high and thick stone walls covered with white lime. The orchard gives light to a sequence of old vaulted rooms, creating an elegant Riad. The aim of the careful restoration work is to preserve the ancient charm of the original Apulian architecture, creating a comfortable holiday home. The small courtyard, completely paved with tumbled slabs of pietra leccese, keep on being the heart of the house, offering nice chilling areas and a place to have dinner. The same slabs have been also used inside the house to create a sort of visual continuity, whereas only in the bathroom and in the kitchen the slabs were replaced by a thin layer of beige micro cement, spread by hand with the cleta (a small trowel), so as not to overburden the vaults.
Some walls have been carefully chosen to be peeled, so that the living masonry made of old square blocks of carparo (“cuzzetti” in the Apulian dialect) reappears. The walls have been illuminated with small led spotlights, characterized by a grazing light to better enhance the morphological walls features.
The warm tones of the pietra leccese and the local carparo are continuously mixed with white lime, spread on all the others walls, in order to create very relaxing atmospheres. The carefully restored wooden windows and doors, have been painted in blue, just like the sky of a typical morning in the south of Italy.
All the outdoor spaces have remained intact, where the succession of the terraces (once used exclusively for the annoyance of vegetables) creates amazing chilling areas. A micro pool has been created between the first two terraces, where its white colour camouflage with the existing. Furthermore, It was decided build the pool in EPS in order to make it lighter and not weigh down the structure below. The white pool seems to be a small volume that has always existed, contrasting with the dark floor made of chianche, now covered with moss and lichen formed over the decades.
Composed of 2 bedrooms, a kitchen and 1 bathroom.
